The new recently installed coffee roaster at the Orchard Street Roasting Plant in action.
This is a thing of beauty, power, and wonder. It also roasts great coffee.
Only in New York…
While I was at a benefit at the Ranshackle Penthouse, I noticed one of the residents of Westbeth Artists Community on Washington and Bethune Street doing some sort of solo interpretive dance for all of NYC. Pretty amazing…

Amazing Video →
this is a developer’s ad for Greenwich Village in the 1960s. Live the suburban dream from the middle of the city! “At night, (cue the drumroll) behold a world of paradoxes and contradictions!” Amazing stuff, from Gothamist.

A quirky dry cleaner, the opened-for-springtime ice cream stand outside General Greene, the killer outdoor patio at Kif, live music at Chez Oskar, a rugged old liquor sign and the absolute gems at Thistle &Clover. A few of the treats in our ‘hood, along Dekalb Ave.
Absolute gems at Thistle & Clover—couldn’t agree more!

By the City / For the City
This city government site allows you to enter and map your own idea for improving the city. You even get to leave your e-mail, presumeably in case Mayor Bloomberg needs to contact you for clarification. You never know!

What do you think of the NYC Waterfront Enhancement Vision that Bloomberg released yesterday? The plan is available at nyc.gov/waves …. (catchy, no?)
DCP, from NYC.gov
I, for one, am ecstatic about the prospect of taking a ferry to work in the future. The goals, which are listed on the site as including protecting wetlands and shorelines, increasing the city’s resilience to climate...
Triangle Factory Fire: centennial anniversary
The hundred year anniversary of the Triangle Factory Fire will be on March 25th this year. You probably remember the tragedy from history class—it killed 146 people, mostly teenage girls who were sewing shirtwaists for the company, it called attention to New York’s corrupt systems and cut-throat industrial conditions, it launched the political careers of witnesses like Franklin and...
Our stay in Memphis was fantastic. We had BBQ, visited Graceland and Sun Studios, and met some great locals who showed us a night on the town. Stay tuned for more posts about the stay. We did however encounter a slight inconvenience: after parking our rental car on the street on Saturday night, we discovered the passenger window smashed in the morning by vandals. These vandals were pretty...

mini-exhibits at MoMa
One of my favorite parts of the galleries were some of the mini-exhibits, presented without fanfare, but which isolated one small connection. It’s the kind of media-viewing you can’t do on youtube and that requires a smart curator. Kind of justifies the whole museum-going experience, even if you are just looking at reproductions and video.
In the architecture section, we loved a...
REVENIR A NEW YORK
Coming home from a trip is always a bit jarring, but it’s a nicer transition coming home to New York since you can always feel like a tourist in this city when you want to. In my earlier mornings, thanks to jet lag, I’ve had lots of time for some preliminary reflections on my trip to gay Paris. Some particularly parisienne visions that are new to me:

Happy Birthday George Washington
In honor of George Washington’s birthday, we are going to list off all of the places where our first president hung out/fought/retreated in New York City:
1) Fraunces Tavern: http://www.frauncestavern.com/
This was #1’s watering hole where he gave his famous farewell address to his troops in 1783.
2) Federal Hall National Memorial: http://www.nps.gov/feha/index.htm
